App Beta-Tester Telegram Groups: Stopping Fake APK and TestFlight Links and Paid "Early Access" Scams

How to keep fake APK and TestFlight links and paid "early access" scams out of app beta-tester Telegram groups.

Many indie developers run a Telegram group for beta testers: people who install pre-release builds, report bugs and suggest features. These groups are valuable and fragile at the same time. Members are used to installing builds from links, which is exactly what attackers want. This post explains the scams that target beta groups and how to set the group up so they rarely work.

What goes wrong in beta groups

Fake build links. A new account posts "v2.4 beta is out, direct APK here" with a link to a file-sharing site. The APK is a repackaged app with spyware or a banking trojan. Because testers expect sideloaded builds, many install it without thinking.

Fake TestFlight or Play testing invites. Links that look like TestFlight or Google Play testing pages but lead to a login page that steals Apple ID or Google credentials.

Paid "early access". "Skip the waitlist, get the pro beta for $5." Real beta programmes are free and never sold by strangers in the chat.

Impersonated developers. An account copies the developer's name and avatar and DMs testers: "Please send me your device logs and your account password so I can reproduce the bug."

Crash-report phishing. "Your build crashed, upload your diagnostic file here" links to a form that asks for an email password.

Set up the group for safe testing

  1. Publish builds only in a read-only Announcements topic (or a linked channel). Pin a line saying: "Builds are posted only here, by the developer account. Any other link to a build is fake."
  2. Use official distribution only: TestFlight public links, Google Play internal or closed testing, or your own website over HTTPS. Avoid random file hosts, so a fake host stands out.
  3. Publish checksums (SHA-256) next to any APK you distribute yourself, and explain in one sentence how to check them.
  4. Give the developer and team visible admin titles, such as "Developer". A fake account can copy a name and photo, but not an admin title in the chat.
  5. Hide the member list, so impersonators can't DM every tester.
  6. Restrict links and files for new members for their first days. Bug reports work fine as text and screenshots.
  7. Join requests with one question, for example: "Which device and OS version will you test on?"

Rules to pin for testers

  • Install builds only from the Announcements topic or the official store testing page.
  • The team will never ask for your password, 2FA codes or payment for beta access.
  • Logs and crash reports go through the in-app feedback form or the official issue tracker, not through private messages.
  • If someone DMs you about the beta, forward the message to an admin.

When a fake build is posted

  1. Delete the message and ban the account (use "delete all messages from this user").
  2. Post a short warning in Announcements: what the fake link looked like and that it is not from the team.
  3. Ask anyone who installed it to uninstall, change the passwords used on that device and, on Android, check for unknown device-admin apps.
  4. Report the file host link and the account to Telegram.

Automatic filtering for busy beta groups

After a launch post or a mention on a popular site, a beta group can grow by hundreds of members in a day, and fake-build spam follows within hours. An anti-ad bot handles the repetitive part: links from accounts that just joined, copy-paste "direct APK" messages, paid-access ads and mass mentions.

虾宝 (Xiabao) is an anti-ad bot for Telegram groups that is free for group owners. Add @xiabaotg_bot as an admin with permission to delete messages and ban users, and it filters ad and scam posts automatically, while your team concentrates on bug reports. The Xiabao setup guide for Telegram groups explains which permissions it needs.
